the ruby sunstone is an artifact of amazing power dating back to 5000 ED (early
Dinotopia- measured before Dinotopia became a single united country.). it was
originally found by the lords of Poseidos and they used it extensively before it
was lost. it is told in legend that Gideon Altair, founder of the sky core,
stole the sunstone and sealed it, along with all the others, in the world
beneath. The powers of the ruby sunstone are many: it can provide warmth as well
as light and energy, this being caused by additional refraction from the
substances inside the stone, allowing it to create heat. the most mysterious
power of the stone, however, is to grant whoever looks upon its darkest desires.
though this may be purely a coincidence, the story tellers of Dinotopia maintain
that it is not and that hundreds of people have received their wishes at the
whim of the stone. the most recent sighting of the ruby sunstone was in the late
1800's, when the explorer Arthur Denison discovered it. it was stolen by the
mercenary lee crab, however and after his death it was lost again.
scientific examination of the stone shows that it is mineraly composed similarly
to an ordinary sunstone. however, while it was forming it must have encountered
a large amount of a rare isotope of plutonium. this element decays extremely
slowly when exposed to light and it is rumored that it will take another half a
billion years before the heat caused by the radiation produced by the decay
ceases. this radiation also has the effect of causing the normal hallucinations
caused by sunstones to be amplified to amazing strength, often rendering those
who gaze into a dreamlike state and if the sunstone is kept close for an
extended period of time the subject will quite possibly go insane due to the
mind-warping qualities of the stone. this isotope also gives the stone its
brilliant red qualities. finally, there are several shards of the stone left
from its cutting in ancient Poseidos. dolphins have been asked often to recover
these shards but have failed. in communion with the animals it was discovered
that the radiation from the stone was so strong that it interrupted the sonar of
the dolphins, rendering them blind and for the one that got within a kilometer
of the city, produced extreme pain in the eyes and other sensory organ.
